This month's PepperMill

Tim’s Lightenin’ Up

It was mentioned to me recently that I’ve been way too serious in my Mill articles of late. So let’s lighten it up this month and you can ponder, smile, snicker or whatever. Maybe you even have a couple of useless facts to share with me?

Did you know…

Because of Davy Jones’ huge popularity as a member of The Monkees, another young singer in London, also named David Jones, was forced to change his name to David Bowie. When The Monkees decided to do a live tour they tapped an up-and-coming, but little known, guitarist named Jimi Hendrix.

Podunk is actually in Massachusetts.

Soaking in a hot tub adds two to three pints of perspiration per hour per person to the water.

pedomancy n. fortunetelling by the soles of the feet.

A “red-letter day” indicates a day of special importance or good fortune. The name arose because in hand-lettered medieval calendars, prayer books and almanacs, monks wrote the names of feast days in red ink. All other days in the calendar, because of their less-colorful inking, were known as black-letter days.

The man who commissioned the Mona Lisa refused it.

Feel smarter? See, learning can be fun!

If we were The Monkees, we’d be ready by now.”
—Frank Zappa (while his band was tuning instruments)

The Monkees are still finding out who they are, and they seem to be improving as performers each time I see them. When they've got it all sorted out, they may be the greatest.”
—George Harrison, 1967
