Tim’s Spinnin’ the Wheel

It’s time for my favorite game of Bookshelf Roulette. I’ve got a few new books and a couple of oldies. Again, I’ve challenged myself to rifle through the pages and find a passage in 60 seconds or less that I can pass along.

“I did some quick math and realized that 5 percent (the amount of shoes being sold by paper mail order catalogs) was equal to $2 billion. It didn’t matter whether I would be willing to buy shoes without trying them on first. What mattered was that consumers were already doing it, and it seemed pretty reasonable to assume that Web sales would one day be at least as big as catalog sales. Alfred and I decided it was at least worth a meeting.”

“Great work entails risk. Most clients do not want to take risks; they prefer a safe retreat into the world of the merely good or, worse, the dismissively average. Still, if they are going to take that risk, they are much more likely to do so with agency people they trust. And trust is the very foundation of a great relationship. And that’s why I say a great relationship leads to great work.”

We tend to use a lot of time binge-watching television shows. It’s a classic example of “just because we can, doesn’t mean we should.” Diving into a book can be just as exciting. Read on!

One ought, every day at least, to hear a little song, read a good poem, see a fine picture, and if it were possible, to speak a few reasonable words.”

From the moment I picked up your book until I laid it down, I was convulsed with laughter. Some day I intend reading it.”

Double Take: To Give, or Not to Give

This month, for Pepper Group’s 20th anniversary, we’re partnering with AmeriCorps and the Greater Chicago Food Depository to feed hungry people in Chicago with a campaign called “Give as many cans as you can.”

It’s upbeat. It’s positive. It shows you can make a difference. And it started us thinking about all the wonderful PSAs, ads and campaigns that came before us, encouraging people to give, and what made them successful.

This month, join Joe and Sharla as we explore our old and new favorite charitable giving campaigns.

We dare you to keep your eyes dry.
